States from best to worst:
- Colorado: Dry heat, easy Plains, anticipation of the Rockies, my first big climb, great scenery
- New York: Very bike friendly (state bicycling routes), Hudson Valley, Erie Canal, Lake Erie
- Utah: Very challenging but doable, best scenery of the trip
- California: Big mountain, scenic at first then finally hit civilization! Also: Golden Gate Bridge
- Nevada: Hardest state but a great challenge, very unique and memorable
- Missouri: Got me in shape real fast but winding roads made for poor visibility
- Ohio: Some good, some bad, longest paved bike path in the country!
- Kentucky: Rumble pads in the shoulders, coal trucks, dogs
- Kansas: The heat, the winds, the trucks... for 450 miles. Being flat did NOT compensate
